FAQ

Have some questions? We have some answers! Let’s start with the basics…

What is Cultivate?

We started in August 2017 as a small batch coffee roasting business with dreams of so much more. We expanded quickly and opened our first coffee shop in Sunnyslope (505 W. Dunlap Ave) two years later, in August 2019. All our proceeds go toward providing job opportunities and life skills to vulnerable and displaced youth in our community.

Who is Cultivate?

We are an extension of the 501c3 nonprofit, Crowd to Community. The nonprofit works to build community by bringing individuals together, and strengthen them with leadership development. The organization saw a need to provide job opportunities for some of the individuals we have worked with, in order to strengthen entire communities. Cultivate Coffee is one area of business to connect those displaced individuals.

Who does Cultivate employ?

We currently have a head roaster and a program manager. Most of their time and work is donated, so most of what we make goes toward employing other people in need of work, as well as providing job and life skills training to help them succeed. Specifically, we are focused on young people aging out of the foster care system, homeless, and refugees.

Wait… did you say refugees? Aren’t they here illegally? Is that safe?

Refugees are often mistakenly associated with immigrants whom have come to the US illegally. This is just not true. All refugees, by definition, are people who have been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster, and are brought into the country by the US government.

Politics aside, there are hundreds of thousands of refugees here now. These are people who are in need. They need help assimilating to a new and foreign culture. They need help learning a new language. And they need to know that there are people who care. As all of those things begin to take place, it becomes safer for the refugees and US citizens alike.

So you’re a nonprofit? Can I donate or volunteer?

Yes, and yes! Contact us if interested in volunteering. You can also donate here:

Let’s get back to the coffee…
Where do you source your beans?

All of our beans are 100% Arabica, high-quality offerings. We take great care to ensure each farm we order from is using sustainable methods for both the land they work and the people who work it. We take just as great care to ensure the beans that we roast are of the best quality.

What quantities are available?

Our customers can order any of our available offerings in 1 pound increments (16oz). You may notice that many roasters sell their coffee in 10, 12, or 14 oz packages. This is because the beans lose water weight during the roasting process. We start with a larger volume in order to give you a full 16oz post-roast.

We also offer wholesale to customers who want to serve our beans in larger quantities. Please contact us for more info.

How come they are only available as whole beans? Can’t you grind them for us?

We could, but in order to get them to you as fresh as possible, whole beans are the way to go. Once the beans are ground, their shelf-life diminishes. However, if you want to come into our shop to pick up your order we’d be happy to grind it here for you.

Once I order, how long until I get them?

We typically roast twice a week, so your order will go in shortly after your order is placed. Freshly roasted coffee is supposed to “rest” for 1-3 days before brewing, so they are considered fresh for a few weeks after the roast. If you are local to us, we will contact you right away to get you your order. If we are shipping to you, we use 2-day priority mailing to ensure you get beans at their freshest.
